President Trump and Congresswoman Elect Ilhan Omar- What We Got After The Elections

One could say they are polar opposites. A Democrat and a Republican. A conservative and a progressive. The new and the old, A Muslim and a Christian. Hey, I’m trying to be nice here, which is why I didn’t go there on that last one!

Trump used fear in his midterm election campaigning. It’s gotten him far in his political career. Trump talked non stop about a caravan of people originating in South America coming to invade the US. Only Republicans could stop the invasion. Unlike Trump, Ilhan Omar did the opposite of stirring up fear. She tried to calm the fears of her Jewish constituents before the election. When asked where she stood on BDS her reply was that it was “not helpful in getting that two state solution.” She went on to say that she thought it stops the dialogue.

Then the election happened. Trump immediately stopped talking about the invaders of the caravan. It’s like it never happened. On November 11th, a mere five days after the election Omar’s people told the website Muslim Girl “Ilhan believes in and supports the BDS movement, and has fought to make sure people’s right to support it isn’t criminalized. She does however, have reservations on the effectiveness of the movement in accomplishing a lasting solution.”

Yes, there is a caravan of people coming from South America heading toward the US. And in Omar’s pre election statement, she never actually said she was against BDS. She only stated problems she sees with the movement. Trump will blame the Democrats for sidetracking him. Omar’s people have already floated the idea that when people criticize her stand on Israel it is based in Islamophobia.

As different as the two are on policy, they both gave us what they thought we needed to hear. The end result is the same. We’ve been played.
